On my way to work, two young fellows, possibly even teenagers, took it upon themselves to let me know what they thought of my body: “Damn girl, you are beautiful. Mmm, hey mami!” and the like. I stopped walking, looked them both straight in the face with the stink eye, and loudly said “Be respectful, please.” (I don’t know why I chose to say that and not something else, but it was the first thing that came out of my mouth.) Then I kept walking and they yelled after me: “I was being respectful. It’s a compliment. You’re ugly. Yeah, f*cking ugly! UGGGGLLLYYYY” Apparently, asking them to show some respect was a huge boner-killer, as I somehow transformed from being the hottest thing on two legs into a hideous aberration just by uttering those magic words! Well, either way I neither asked for nor cared about their opinions, so I was relatively unfazed. Ah, teenagers. Let’s hope that being loudly called out by a grown-ass woman on a crowded street will make them think twice next time about their behaviour towards women in public. I also got a handful of whistles and catcalls on the bike ride home after my shift, so word to the wise, especially to my lady-friends: there is currently an abundance of harassers lurking on Sainte Catherine, it seems!
